In early summer, the lush crops in the fields are just about to reach maturity. Yet hidden beneath this verdant canopy, swarms of pests feast voraciously, threatening the harvest that lies ahead. The most effective way to eliminate these unwelcome intruders is to apply pesticides. However, excessive use of pesticides can harm both the human living environment and food safety. In recent years, Chinese researchers have begun applying nanotechnology to pesticide production. Can this new generation of pesticides effectively address crop diseases and pest infestations, safeguard the natural ecosystem, and ensure food security? What Are Nano‑Pesticides? A nanometer is a unit of length—1 nanometer equals one-millionth of a millimeter. If you were to slice a hair with a diameter of 0.05 millimeters into 50,000 equal parts along its length, each resulting strand would measure approximately 1 nanometer across. When pesticide particles shrink down to the nanoscale, remarkable phenomena emerge—phenomena invisible at the macroscopic level. Compared with traditional pesticides of the same mass, nano‑pesticides contain roughly two million times more active ingredient particles, with surface areas increased by hundreds of times. Early inorganic pesticides typically required about one to two kilograms per acre. With the development of organically synthesized chemical pesticides, application rates dropped to just a few tens of grams per acre. The successful creation of nano‑pesticides has reduced usage even further: today, only 5 to 6 grams per acre—about the amount contained in a standard water bottle cap—are sufficient. Are Nano‑Pesticides Safe? From the very beginning of designing nano‑pesticides, scientists prioritized environmental safety and human friendliness. These products not only exhibit high toxicity against harmful pests but also show over 40% reduced toxicity toward beneficial insects such as the seven‑spotted ladybug. In China, pesticide regulation is even stricter than that for pharmaceuticals. Before approval, assessments must account for impacts on humans, bees, birds, fish, silkworms, and other organisms—all of which must meet rigorous standards. The Current State of Nano‑Pesticides in China Since the start of the 21st century, countries like the United States and Japan have launched research initiatives on nano‑pesticides, developing innovative formulations. Although China’s research in this field began relatively late, it has progressed rapidly. In 2006, Chinese scientists initiated studies on nano‑pesticides. By 2014, the first national major scientific research program dedicated to nano‑agriculture had been launched. After more than a decade of intensive research, China has gradually established a core technological system for producing nano‑pesticides, entirely based on its own intellectual property rights, giving it a leading edge on the international stage. To date, China has conducted pilot trials of nano‑pesticides across 170 counties in 19 provinces, targeting 20 different pest and disease control objectives affecting 17 major crops, including rice, wheat, corn, and citrus fruits.
